With groups like Xscape, Boyz II Men, and T.L.C. the 90’s produced some of the greatest and most memorable music of our generation. Anyone who was around during the 90’s knows MC Hammer’s song ‘Can’t touch this’, or the infamous “Oh, my, God. Becky, Look at her Butt” from Sir Mix-a-Lot’s ‘Baby Got Back’, and best believe I can still spit every word of Left Eye’s rap in TLC’s Waterfalls! That special something that made the 90’s so great has been missing in the current state of music. UNTIL, DJ E-Feezy hit the game. DJ E-Feezy is well known as one of the hottest DJ’s in Miami. Enlisting the help of Rico Love’s producer, Kasanova, the two have revamped the 1991 song ‘Sex You Up’ by Color Me Badd to create a new sound that has been absent in the industry. By sampling this throwback hit they’ve transitioned the old school elements that we love and updated them with the new school dynamic. The remix of ‘Sex You Up’ features Plies, Trina, Super J, and Young Star whose verses describe just how they’re going to “Sex You Up”. And let’s just say none of their intentions are pure…
I had the opportunity to interview the music producer behind ‘S.Y.U’, Mr. Kasanova, a Louisville, KY native currently residing in Miami, FL. Kasanova is a music producer with Rico Love at Division 1, and the song ‘Sex You Up’ is just a slice of his talents. Check out the interview below where we discuss Plies’ Instagram, Trina being the Baddest, and ‘S.Y.U’. You can also take a listen to this new hit.
-How do you feel about music from the 90s versus today’s music?
Sheesh. Of course everybody loves that era. I do too, because everything was filtered back then. If it wasn’t ready it wasn’t coming out. Everybody took their time on the craft and artist development. I love that about music back then. I also love the music today because it’s getting back to the point where people care about what they’re doing. But I love them both equally. You digs.”
-What sets this version of ‘Sex You Up’ apart from the original version?
“Hmm. Good questions. First off Trina and Plies on the song that right there sets it apart from back then. That version was good for that era. Both songs have the same method, but just different takes. This version is completely urban and completely ratchet. I think the old version had a softer side and this one is more gritty, more hard.”
-Plies, Trina, Super J, and Young Star are all involved on this song, how did you get all of these names together for this one project?
“I have to give DJ E-Feezy the credit for that. Young Star gave the idea to Feezy then he gave it to me. Then Feezy reached out to Plies and Trina. Plies is known for not holding his tongue and Trina is just sexy, who wouldn’t want her on this record. Super J is incredible and Young Star his animated ass. Gotta give Feezy the credit so shout-out to him.”
-So, Trina is the only female rapper on this song and being that Trina is the “Baddest” would you ever sex her up?
“Come on man you putting me on the spot. *Laughs* I mean you know… damn man. I mean you know if Trina came to me and said what’s up, you know its action. Ok on to the next question. Shout-out to Trina.”
-Of everyone involved whose verse did you think was the best and why?
“This is gonna sound so political but it’s the truth I don’t have a favorite verse. I feel like everyone did their thing. Super J his vocals are amazing he’s gonna be a star. And Young Star will be too. On the end of the song he’s very metaphorical. And Plies so ratchet, and I love it! Who else would start a song with “Your P*ssy smell like chitterlings..” And then Trina always does her thing. She comes on talking that boss shit. I just think it’s personally about what you like and I like it all.”
-In the song Plies says that Feezy likes his girls cute and Plies likes em’ easy, true statement or nah?
“You gon’ have to ask Plies for that. I don’t know. You can leave me out of that. I’m pretty sure you know his type from his Instagram posts, but I’m pretty sure he like em’ all, let’s just leave it at that.”
-There are a lot of hilarious videos of Plies on Instagram. What is the craziest thing he’s ever said? And, is it really as hard to understand him as people make it seem?
“I don’t think it’s hard to understand what he’s saying at all. He does have a lot of hilarious videos. I like the one where he was talking bout he don’t want no pussy til’ after Christmas. He has a lot of videos that are funny as hell. He has so many of them I just be dying. The hair one was funny too. The one where he went over somebody’s house to get his girl hair done. That one was funny. He got a lot though, y’all just got to follow him.”
-I know you used to rap so if you jumped in on this track how would you have sexed them up?
“Man, you know, y’all might find out on the remix. I’ll say just watch out. I might throw something out next week……” *Ayeee. Don’t forget you heard it on keevamarie.com first.*
-Who of the following would you marry, ditch, and in the words of the song “S.Y.U.”? Nene Leakes, Christina Milian, & Nicki Minaj.
“Ditch.. Nene Leakes. Marry Nicki Minaj & “S.Y.U” Christina Milian.”
-Why?
“Nene got a big mouth. So she will always get us in trouble with that mouth. Marry Nicki cuz Nicki is about her hustle and would keep me motivated to hustle just like she hustles. Christina Milian is a sweetheart but I probably would just love to smash because she was my high school crush since the ‘Between Me and You’ days.”
-Any more projects in the works for you?
“I been fiddling with a personal project called ‘Old Habits’ I don’t know if I’ll ever release it. One day I wake up I want to, the next day I don’t because when I started on it I was in a different space than I am now. It’s a fun record but it’s darker than anything else I’ve done. Not depressing but just darker. If I ever get back in that space I’ll release it. But, I love it. It’s dope. But, my main focus right now is Rico Love’s Album, ‘Turn the Lights On’ that comes out May 19th. I also have a monumental record on it. It’s something special, but I can’t release the name of it yet. That’s my main focus right now. So yea ‘Old Habits’ that’s my album that I might put out, Rico Love’s Album ‘Turn the Lights On’ that comes out May 19th. And I just keep working. Also, shout-out to Young Chris and shout-out to Puff. He has a video where he was working out to a record I did for Young Chris.”
-Why should people go listen to ‘Sex You Up’?
“People need to get this song because it’s hot! We didn’t expect the huge response we got, but it’s a hot song.”
-How can people get this song, is it available for download anywhere?
“As of right now it’s only available on E-Feezy’s sound cloud If you go to his Instagram the link is there. Hopefully soon it’ll be on iTunes. Hot 97, 99 Jamz, Power 105 have all played it. Hopefully, it’ll be in KY soon. It’ll definitely be the summer record!” [ DJ E-Feezy’s Sound Cloud: https://soundcloud.com/djefeezy & Instagram: DJEFEEZYHH ]
