Although catchy, the song “Trap Queen” is simply the story of a Bonnie and Clyde-esque “hood love,” but this catchy tune by Fetty Wap was a radio hit that caught the ears of many and introduced the term “trap queen” as a summer staple. The term glorified “hood love” and was almost transitioned into a term of endearment. Ooooohhhh how a good beat can hypnotize the masses…. And then evolve into a fan favorite that energizes arenas full of people. The catchy hit “Trap Queen”, amongst other songs like “Make It”, “679”, and “Again” are just a few of the many songs Fetty Wap performed during his Monster Energy Outbreak Tour at the House of Blues in Chicago, IL.
Fetty Wap’s portfolio is known to feature memorable tunes that catch listeners’ ears with melodic hip hop antics. While his songs mesmerize fans with addictive beats, his performance introduced me to the real artist behind the Fetty Wap name. An artist who stunned me with his ability to actually harmonize and carry notes. I witnessed that beyond the typical radio designed music, Fetty Wap was hitting notes that I didn’t even know were within his talents! Now, I’m not saying that he is anywhere near a Whitney Houston, or even a Beyoncé, but I’ll say imagine the Drake effect with a lot more soul!
During the show Fetty Wap, presented himself as an artist who genuinely appreciates his success. He gratefully admitted that after his motorcycle accident back in September of 2015 he never even went to physical therapy and that instead the love from the fans and this tour was his rehab. His high energy performance seemed to be proof that this form of rehab is working for him. Throughout the night Fetty Wap’s animated character entertained the audience as he danced and partied with the fans through his playlist. And, even though he took a moment to explain that he wasn’t a dancer, his stage presence and signature dance moves definitely proved differently. He killed the stage whipping it up to “Trap Queen”, and bopped around as he shouted out Chicago with the lyrics from his song “Make It” emphasizing, “I started to scoring and sh*t, CHICAGO BULLS ’96, I’M JORDAN AND SH*T!!!” His energy fed the crowd and after giving a packed house a fully loaded set he left his fans with a show to remember.
