Lawrence’s biggest issue is himself.
Since the end of season one of Insecure, I’ve tried to locate a reason to sympathize with the Lawrence Hive and all their emotions big enough for a two-bedroom apartment in LA. As a black man who’s had my share of struggle-bus breakups and unemployment, I could relate to his situation, somewhat. However, something about Lawrence’s character and the actions of the Lawrence Hive never sat right with me. Being a founding member of #TeamIssa, I assumed that it would ultimately be her character that draws out the ultimate flaw in Lawrence. I mean, she has known him the longest and still desires to be with him. Yet, I was surprised (and thrilled as f*ck) that Tasha, the perky t*tty rebound chick, was actually the person to give Lawrence his duly deserved dragging when she said, and I quote, “You’re worse than a f*ck n*gga, you a f*ck n*gga who thinks he’s a good dude” *CLICK*, as she proceeds to end the phone call. It was in that moment that it hit me, everything Tasha dragged Lawrence for is all the reason why #TeamLawrence at its core and everything they have rooted for are unworthy of a group formation.
Within that phone call Tasha, so justifiably, laid out all the reasons Lawrence ain’t worth rooting for. Lets us digest her moment of clarity…
“Quit acting like you give a f*ck about what I want.” – Tasha.
Lawrence was never concerned with what Tasha wanted, or what Issa wanted for that matter. Everyone in his hive was praising to high heaven when Lawrence was breaking in Tasha’s back from the season finale to apparently the season 2 premiere three months later. Yes, Tasha did want him, but he was there not for her but for himself. Lawrence is a master of showing up in spaces physically, but being emotionally unavailable and mentally preoccupied. We cannot measure his physical presence as showing up for Tasha. He used her to escape his body physically, while she was left to never seeing him show up for her emotionally.
“[Quit] apologizing for sh*t you wasn’t even sorry for.” – Tasha.
This hit my heart. Lawrence is so one dimensional with honesty. He tells the truth about where he is at, what he has done, but none of that sh*t matters because we never know how he feels. He tells Tasha he slept with Issa. He tells Tasha he is sorry, but he doesn’t unpack that experience of feelings with her. It is because he ain’t sorry for what he did. When he had sex with Issa, he wanted to take his power back, but he couldn’t admit that to Tasha because that wouldn’t make him a “good guy”.
“You worse than a f*ck n*gga, you a f*ck n*gga who thinks he’s a good dude. ” – Tasha.
This statement is the whole reason why I couldn’t get with #TeamLawrence, HE. IS. A. F*CK. N*GGA. Lawrence lacks emotional intelligence and vulnerability, when his ego is the fuel (as it is this season) his actions are the perfect recipe for smiley faced n*ggas who always have the perfect excuse for hurting you because they hurt. Lawrence is not a good dude and he is unwilling to accept that he is still hurting and that other women cannot fix that. His shallow honesty gives viewers false hope that he’s understanding the severity of his emotional pain, but in reality, he has yet to crack the surface. Good guys aren’t good because they say nice things, it’s because their actions match their values. Lawrence has to redefine what his values are post-Issa. Until then, leave Tasha alone.
